Clever Cloggs & Smarty Pants Nurseries

Jennifer Lewis and her sister Sylvia came to East London Small Business Centre in 1994, after Jennifer was made redundant from her accountancy job.

Although, neither of the sisters had previous experience in running a business, let alone a nursery full of needy toddlers, they started working on their business plan with the help of ELSBC’s business counsellor. Their first nursery, Smarty Pants, opened its doors in 1995, after receiving East London Small Business Centre’s business start-up loan worth £15,000.

The success of the first nursery, led to the Lewis sisters tendering for other nurseries within east London, and now run four nurseries, employing 33 part and full-time staff, while enjoying a thriving business.

Last year, based on Jennifer’s proven track record, she tendered for and won to run a new purpose built children’s centre located in Abbey Lane, Newham, making this their fourth nursery.

Over the last 15 years, Jennifer has built a strong relationship with her business counsellor, Paul Creavin, and has continued to come to ELSBC for on-going advice on her businesses.
